  61. Skid (C) is a novel, compiled using a hypertext converter so you can
  62. read it from your computer screen. If you're bored with everything
  63. else you can do with your computer, have a look at Skid.

  65. This program contains about forty percent of a novel called Skid. If you
  66. like what you see you you will need to order the entire novel. (see
  67. order form) This will cost you US$10 p@p included outside of New
  68. Zealand.

  70. What they reckon about Skid:
  71.  
  72. SKID is a novel of considerable imaginative skill
  73. that pokes fun at all forms of political correctness, while also
  74. indicating that there are dangerous signs of a disintegrating world
  75. that do not get adequately taken care of, that has several
  76. parallels to life on earth as the reader will know and recognise.
  77.  
  78. The plot addresses some serious themes, touching on issues as
  79. wide as the survival of any planet in the universe; from
  80. pollution, to the exploitation of natural resources; the pros and
  81. cons of collective versus individual action; organic versus
  82. synthetic food; survival with humour versus the alienating aspects of a
  83. form of political correctness.

  85. Humour enters into all these fields which makes the book work
  86. effectively - mainly through the reactions of the "offworlders",
  87. Bruce (from New Zealand) and Sue from the USA. Both Bruce and Sue
  88. react in stereotypical ways that show us they are caricatures of
  89. the cultures they come from - but are drawn with such skill which
  90. makes these characteristics amusing for the reader as we recognise
  91. and are able to laugh at ourselves.

  93. Unlike much science fiction, which gets bogged down in its own
  94. detail and tends to stray so far from known worlds it is often
  95. hard to get a grasp on the plot of the book, this book will
  96. appeal to a wide audience - aficionados of the science fiction
  97. and those who just enjoy a good read.

  99. You do not have to read Skid lineraly like a book you can highlight
  100. a name or subject and jump through the text. ie highlighting the name
  101. of one of the characters will allow you to hop through the text
  102. and follow the adventures and misadventures of that character.

  104. The registered version of Skid offers a print option and allows the
  105. reader to utilise an associated file to create their own hyperead
  106. colour schemes.

  129. ===== Installation =====================================
  130.  
  131. The installation procedure for Skid is quite simple. Copy Skid.exe into
  132. a directory eg C:\Skid along with the associated files and simply
  133. execute Skid.exe using a file manager, import Skid.exe into windows
  134. using the program manager or type Skid at the dos prompt.
  135. eg C:\skid\skid.
  136.  
  137. The exact steps you need to take will depend on how you received Skid.
  138.  
  139. INSTALLING FROM A DISKETTE
  140.  
  141. To install to your hard drive from a diskette you need to
  142. perform the following steps.
  143.  
  144. Note:1\ This assumes you have received Skid in the form of an archived
  145. file called Skid1.2.zip
  146.      2\You can run Skid from a diskette if you want to.
  147.  
  148.    o  Place Skid1.2.zip distribution diskette disk in the
  149.       appropriate diskette drive.

  151.    o  Create a directory on your target drive eg C:\Skid and copy
  152.       the zip file into that directory.
  153.  
  154.    o Use pkunzip or winzip to unzip the file (2.04g or later versions).

  156. INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE

  158. If you downloaded Skid1.2 from a BBS (or received it in the form of
  159. archive files from some other source), you will need to perform the
  160. following steps.

  162.    o  Extract the contents of the archive file(s) in a temporary
  163.       directory on your hard drive.  The procedure for doing this
  164.       varies, depending on the form in which you received the package.
  165.       In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading this text means
  166.       that you already have the necessary tools and knowledge to
  167.       perform this step.  If not, you should be able to obtain
  168.       directions for this from the same source from which you received
  169.       the package.

  171.    o  Copy Skid.exe and the associated files into a directory, eg
  172.       C:\Skid and Execute Skid.exe to begin reading.
